The Hate U Give - Book Cover Redesign
Personal project, 2024
Type: Graphic Design, Visual Communication
Skills: Photoshop, Illustrator
"The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas tells the story of 16 year old Starr, whose life is changed after an encounter with the police. The book explores themes of racism and police brutality.
My redesign amplifies the book's themes of identity, activism, police brutality, and covert racism. Employing figure-ground psychology, I subtly integrate a woman's face emerging from the cover's left side. Additionally, I utilize color to reveal the word "THUG" within the title, prompting viewers to delve deeper into the narrative's commentary on covert racism.

Typography
Despina
Iowan Old Style
"Despina" was chosen in order to reflect the books' themes of social justice & activism. It's serious and garners attention through its bold, thick lettering. It also serves as a good contrast with Iowan Old Style serif's font.
