The San Gabriel Valley has been known as “The Suburban Chinatown”since the 1980s. With boba places on every other street and delicious food inhabiting every corner, people come to know the SGV through its food and heavy Asian culture.
“The 626 Project” presents the San Gabriel Valley through a whimsical, surrealistic lens, depicting that behind the food comes abundance of culture and immigrants who work to establish their home in America. The generations who grew up in the SGV are shaped by their surroundings & culture; bonding through boba, hanging out at strip malls, studying hard in school, and spending time with aunties and uncles through New Year festivals. In this piece, we celebrate 626 and its people, as well as the formation of identity.
